Mauritius

Mauritius, formally the Republic of Mauritius, is island located in Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometers southeast of the African continent, east of Madagascar. It contains the main island (commonly known as Mauritius), as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. The Mascarene Islands include the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, as well as nearby Réunion (a French overseas department). Port Louis, Mauritius’ capital and largest city, is located on the main island, where the majority of the population resides. Mauritius’ population are ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and religiously varied due to its geographic location and centuries of colonialism. It is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the most widely practiced religion. The majority of the population is Indo-Mauritians, with large Creole, Sino-Mauritian, and Franco-Mauritian minorities.
