Willingdon Island

Willingdon Island, Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India

Willingdon Island is India’s largest manmade island, located in the city of Kochi in the state of Kerala. Much of the current Willingdon Island was taken from the Lake of Kochi, with dredging soil filling in around a previously existing but little natural island. Willingdon Island is noteworthy because it houses the Kochi Naval Base, the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command, the Plant Quarantine Station, Custom House Cochin, and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. Other facilities related with the port are also located on the island, including the Office of the Cochin Port Trust, the Customs Office, and more than two dozen export-import offices, warehouses, a few hotels, and business centers.
