Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands Regency is a group of roughly seventy Indonesian islands and islets located about 150 kilometers off the western coast of Sumatra. They encompass 6,033.76 km2 and have a population of roughly 90 000 people according to the most recent census. The largest of the islands is Siberut. Sipura (or Sipora), North Pagai (Pagai Utara), and South Pagai (Pagai Selatan) are the other important islands. The islands are located off the coast of Sumatra, across the Mentawai Strait. The Mentawai people are the indigenous residents of the islands. The Mentawai Islands have become a well-known surfing destination, with over 40 boats offering surf charters to international visitors.
