Nias Island

Nias (also known as Little Sumatra) is an Indonesian island located off the western coast of Sumatra. The name of the island is derived from the word used by the islanders to refer to themselves, niha (“human”). Tanö Niha is the name of the island in the indigenous language (literally the land of humans). Nias is also the name of the archipelago (Kepulauan Nias), which comprises the Batu Islands to the south-east and the little Hinako Islands to the west. It is largely lowland, rising to around 800 meters above sea level. At the time of the 2020 Census, the island (including the Batu Islands and minor outlying islands) had a population of 880,550 people.
