Île Amsterdam

Île Amsterdam is a French Southern and Antarctic Lands island in the southern Indian Ocean. It is also known as Amsterdam Island, New Amsterdam, or Nouvelle Amsterdam. The island lies approximately equidistant from Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica, as well as the British Indian Ocean Territory and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (about 3,200 km from each). The research station at Martin-de-Viviès is the only village on the island and is home to roughly thirty researchers and employees investigating biology, meteorology, and geomagnetics.
