Vallarpadam is one of the islands that make up Kochi in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located in Vembanad Lake, also known as Kochi Lake, and has a population of over 10,000 people. Vallarpadam is one of the two islands that surround the Port of Kochi. The port’s International Container Transshipment Terminal is entirely located on the island. Vypin island is to the west, and Mulavukad island is to the east. 70% of the island is covered in paddy fields, and the economy is based mostly on inland fishing using traditional methods and rice production. The main source of income for the Dheevara fisherman community is fishing with a specially designed net called Valakettu.
